How to Generate Online Reviews for Your Business

Reviews are a game changer. Positive or negative, they can make or mar a business, because most customers read them before deciding to buy.

A happy customer spreads the word and comes back. An unhappy one warns others away. Good reviews mean more deals; bad ones drain business unless you act quickly. So how do you generate more good reviews?

Know where reviews should live

Reviews only help if the right people can find them. Register on the platforms your customers use, such as Google Business Profile, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, Facebook, Amazon, Angie’s List or Capterra, and make it easy to leave a review there.

Provide a great customer experience

This is the most important step. Customer-centric businesses keep customers and win new ones. Not every customer will be happy, but issues resolved quickly still earn good reviews.

Be social

Customers want to see real people talking about your products. Social media is visual and lets people share detailed reviews with photos, which builds trust and brings leads. Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok and Snapchat are good places to start.

Make writing reviews easy

Happy customers rarely leave reviews unprompted, while unhappy ones rarely hesitate. Ask at the moment a customer tells you they’re pleased. Send a short follow-up after each order, set up a review link for each product, and invite customers on social media.

Bring your staff in

Train your team to deliver great service, resolve complaints fast, and ask for a review after a job well done. Give them the tools and authority to fix problems on the spot.

Acknowledge every review

A simple thank-you tells customers you value the time they took.

Respond to every review, positive or negative. Many businesses ignore even the good ones. A reply, a repost or a retweet reinforces positive experiences and builds relationships.

Handle negative reviews well

You won’t please everyone. Respond with empathy, apologise, don’t get defensive, and fix the problem quickly. Treat it as a chance to improve. Customers who see you respond well often become your most loyal.
